RE: Aux start switch and Magnetek 6345 converter
I did the 6300/7300 upgrade and it's been better than the old unit. The upgrade doesn't have the loud humming noise and I'm not boiling the batteries anymore. If I was aware of the 3-4 stage units I probably would have gone that route.

Your welcome. Mine doesn't last a couple of years cause I use the darn thing for everything now. It's almost too convenient. It's really nice not having to worry about long hoses and extension cords. An added bonus is it will also power air tools like a impact wrench to take your lug nuts off etc.

I've got two of them. Fairly quiet and good heat. The thermostat on one is a little inaccurate but good overall quality. I got tired of constantly replacing the cheapo's.

One other thing to try is a high speed Dremel tool with a small rotary cutting blade. You can cut a new slot for a srewdriver or cut the whole head off flush with the surface. Then after you get the ladder off, you might have enough fastener exposed to get a bite on it with the vise grips.

You can use any properly rated oil.. Nothing special about the ONAN brand save the price (It's higher) I use a good grade of synthetic in mine
NOTE: if you use synthetic do check it often.. Onans like to suck oil don't you know. Please do not ask ME why as I can't answer

I think this is right so here goes. Most air cooled engines use more oil cause their internal clearances are larger. They need that since they run hotter and expand more internally. Air doesn't cool as efficiently as water so the oil takes on more cooling load than a water cooled engine. It's the same in aircraft, motorcycles, and the old VW's so many of us used to own. So for our Onan's air and oil do the whole job.

If this is your first time changing oil in your genny be careful you don't strip the drain bolt putting it back in. It can be a bugger to get started and sometimes guys will strip em. Take your time starting the bolt. You don't need to use Onan oil it's just a marketing gimmick. My Onan shipped with 15-40 in it but I run 10-30 in it right now. Synthetic is a good idea but it will use a little more oil just watch the level.

I'm gonna go with Enblethen. The part he is calling master cylinder compensating is also called the proportioning valve. It has springs and check balls in it that stick from rust. I think thats the problem.

I saw a show on fuel tank design that was real interesting. The inlet for the tank is placed so that the tank only fills to 80% capacity. It's to allow for the expansion of fuel as it warms up. If the tank would fill 100% it could potentially burst from this expansion. I do think it tends to skew the mileage figures of otherwise well intentioned folks.

I installed a single handle shower in my house not long ago. It has the pressure compensating valve inside that keeps the temperature even all the time. As I recall I had to redo the plumbing into it as it was completely different from what was there. Might be the same for an RV. If you can get behind the plumbing and expose it so you can work I think it would be doable. I can't recall the brand but the big box stores all have them. Their more spendy but well worth it.

I did the Banks and really like them but I keep my rig forever. If your gonna get rid of it in 3-5 years I'd go with the Thorley's.
My Thorleys are still good after 9 years, but with a lifetime warranty, the 3-5 year time frame seems a little short.
I think the Thorley's are limited lifetime if I'm not mistaken, where the Banks are lifetime. Might not make a difference in any event.But yes, they look really good.

There are a few weak spots to check on the V-10 when they act up. One is the IAC(idle air control) valve on top of the engine. They like to go bad and some of the V-10 guys even carry a spare one. Also check the little rubber elbows near the IAC they like to rot underneath where you cant see um. Another sensor that likes to go bad is the speed sensor on back of the pumpkin on the differential but yea see what the scanner says.

Both gasolines produce the same power, it's that your engine may react to the fuels differently. Most modern engines have a knock sensor that if activated, will automatically reduce the timing and give you less power and mileage.
If your engine is not pinging, then you will see no difference with high test fuel. It's very common for motorhome engines to knock/ping due to the extra load and heat that they must deal with. One other thing to be aware of is you can have regular and significant pinging without hearing it in it's early stages. By the time you hear it it can be quite advanced. Also the more miles on the engine the more likely it is to ping. This is from deposits that build up on the piston and cylinder head which increase the compression ratio. They call this "Octane Creep". So, if your engine demands higher octane than yes, you will get better mileage if you use high test cause you will get all the spark advance the engine will allow. But if the engine doesn't need it your wasting your money.
So did you ever do a test with different fuel brands, or different fuel suppliers?
Are you basing your statements on fact or fiction? Something that you have tried? Or listening to gossip?
I based my test on recording the fuel mileage on my work truck, and I was getting 10% better mileage by switching to Cheveron and Mobil fuels, compared to buying the Shell gas I had used before. Every once in a while, I would buy Shell (because I was running low on fuel, and the station was close to my house) and I would get 10 MPG. 11 MPG with Mobil and Cheveron.
The service manager would not allow us to purchase higher octane fuel, so I did not conduct that type of test while working for them.
The test with Arco and Thrifty and Costco brands was done by a friend who was amazed when I filled the tank with Cheveron and it lasted an additional 80 miles! That is 20% farther on one tank of fuel. At a cost of only an additional 10% because of the more expensive fuel per gallon.
Another way of looking at it is your engine is capable of it's best mile per gallon under ideal operating conditions. If the computer tells the engine to retard the ignition cause it doesn't like the fuel, your power and mileage suffer. So higher octane doesn't make more power, it liberates the power potential of your engine(the same way headers work). If the engine pings or knocks, it is not making it's best power. You get best power when the fuel burns in a controlled manner. When it pings or knocks the fuel is burning prematurely or even exploding which isn't making best power. The only difference between regular fuel and high octane fuel is the high octane has more anti-knock additive.
Fred, I wasn't taking issue with your post in fact I agree. I always avoided Arco fuel in the past. It was cheaper with it's 10% alcohol in it but to get the same performance you push the pedal a little further so there's no real savings. Now in Oregon they all have alcohol so it doesn't matter anymore.

If your able to do it please post details. I considered it for my 4K Onan in my motorhome so I called Onan engineering and spoke to two guys. They told me no and hell no, but I thought it was suppose to be easy too.
